Here I observed a great number of aspen trees, vulgarly called the quaking ash, because of the singular quality of the leaves keeping in almost perpetual motion. The Indian name of it is woman's tongue, for they say if one leaf be set in motion all the rest begin, and then there is no such thing as stopping them.

The Aspen poplar, being widely distributed, has in consequence, many names, of which Quaking aspen and trembling aspen are the most common.
